Collection: Marcos Benitez

Marcos Benítez (Asunción, June 10, 1973) is a contemporary visual artist from Paraguay. He has developed a work on the border between academic traditions of modern Paraguayan art and contemporary and popular expressions, with printmaking productions that dialogue with Paraguayan popular art from a conceptual perspective. Marcos Benítez's artistic training is not strictly academic, but he has trained with great masters of modern and contemporary Paraguayan art, as well as with reference artists from the region, such as the Brazilian master of engraving Livio Abramo, Edith Jiménez and Olga Blinder. In 1995 he held his first solo exhibition of objects and prints at the Galería de Arte Fábrica in Asunción, Paraguay. Coming from an important school of engraving in Paraguay, in his following exhibitions his work explores the potential of installation. In his work, self-representation or the image of the artist is important.

In his later works from the 1990s, he also showed an interest in popular crafts, but in this case, those produced in areas even more peripheral than those of popular crafts circuits such as public garbage dumps. His latest works are a reflection on the dramatic intimate changes linked to an expanded horizon of collective social experience.
